So let us get down to what a typist’s role is and what is needed to begin an online typing job.
What Does A Home Typist Do?
A home typist is a person who types up documents from their home office. However, that’s just a glimpse of the job description. Typing jobs can cover many things, ranging from small data entry jobs, transcription work to even medical transcription, which in most cases may require additional training and certification.
Do I Need Any Special Skills?
For most work-at-home jobs, companies prefer typists with prior typing experience. However, since some companies are willing to pay based on an individual skill level, there’s a great chance of finding a company that is willing to recruit beginners. Keep in mind the pay may be very low.
Here are some recommended skills that are great to have if you are looking to maximize your earnings:
- Fast and accurate typing skills, of course.
- Good listening skills, especially when transcribing audio files.
- Outstanding grammar, spelling and punctuation skills.
- Basic knowledge of using a computer. You may have to troubleshoot technical issues, upload files or install new software

Hi. I work for GoTranscribe and 60 cents is the max you can make per audio minute as a transcriber. I make 23 to 24 cents an audio minute. Editors make more, but they don’t say how much.
Hi lash– I’m a professional transcriber, been doing it for 6 years now, i have clients and i also train new transcribers. So my experience with rev was interesting. i applied and i got through, after five hours they locked me out of the account, i had never attempted any work. i wrote an email to them and a lady said they would look in to it. 5 months went by, i wrote again and they said they would not activate the account due to private reasons. after a while i flew from Tanzania to the state where their offices are housed and met up with one of their office guys and he was straight forward they don’t hire Africans. That’s just 100% wrong considering I’m older than the company in this business. also recommend other sites that hire everyone.
Hi my name is victoria, im a stay at home mom of two beautiful kids, i have been looking every where for a work at home job.
Due to i cant go back to work due to me c-section i had with my first child. If anyone know a good company to work from for beginners please let me know thanks so much and god bless you all….
Hi, are these websites just a scam? Will they steal my money?
Hi Nora! The sites listed here are all legitimate, no scams!
Hi Kenji! Transcribe Me is a great site to start for entry level typing work. I also recommend checking out this list of sites that let you practice typing for free – https://www.dreamhomebasedwork.com/5-free-online-typing-tools-for-typists/
I agree with Britt regarding Rev. The e-mail I received simply stated that they have very high standards and I did not meet those standards, plus a nice little foot note informing me not to respond because they wont tell me why I didn’t qualify and I can reapply in 6 months. You actually endorse this company? I my opinion, they are far from entry level. Very disappointing and I will never waste my time with that company again. I assume you are receiving commission from steering people to their site. Oh well, another scam discovered, another endorsed review, another waste of my time. -entry level my gluteus maximus .
Hi Cory! Thanks for writing in. Just an FYI: All comments submitted are approved by me. I check for new comments periodically throughout the day, so I think you are taking this way too personal.
REV does offer an entry level typing job call a “Captioner”. Here’s another review from Work at Home Adventures that will give you more insight about the job – http://wahadventures.com/2015/03/earn-extra-240-month-captioning-video-rev.html. For your reference, 95% of the sites I share don’t compensate me for sharing, so let’s not assume.
It’s always funny when folks try to insult others for doing the best they can to provide
Yes, continue to apply. I also recommend checking out SigTrack http://sigtrack.net/ . They are actively hiring and you can get started today. The job involves keying in voters registration info. More details are on their site.
Hey Lashay! Just wanted to get in touch with you and tell you that rev said they were hiring and i took all of their test/application and i got an email from them saying, “we will not be moving forward with the application process. We have rigorous minimum standards.” Did you know that they send people emails like this? I feel that I am wasting my time trying test and applying for online jobs and getting rejected or never told that they don’t want to hire. any tips? any ideas? I’m a really fast typer and I need a part time job during the day because I work nights. any help would be appreciated.
Hi Britt! That is strange, since I just spoke with a representative of the company and they are still hiring. Don’t feel like you are wasting your time. There are many people that apply and apply for months until the right opportunity comes. I would recommend evaluating your resume, then aiming for the jobs that fit your skills. You will have a better chance of getting hired with positions you qualify for.
