There has always been online English teaching jobs available but since the last year and a half the demand for online teachers has exploded. Before I list the best companies for online English teaching jobs, you need to know exactly what is needed before you can start this kind of work from home job.
What Do You Need to Start Teaching English Online?
To start teaching English online there are a few basics such as the following equipment:

- High speed internet
- A PC or laptop with camera
- A smartphone

What to Look for in an Online English Teaching Job
Make sure to do your research as not all companies offer the same benefits. If you wish to work from home an online teaching job is a great opportunity but does it fill the following criteria?
- Have flexible working hours
- Able to teach various age groups
- Provide lesson plans
- Competitive pay rates
- Easy to receive payment
There are companies where you have to work a set number of hours within a specific timezone. Or you may have to teach all age groups which might be difficult.
Another concern is that not all companies provide lesson plans which can be time consuming to do yourself if this is not your only job. Try to sign up to companies that provide you with the relevant teaching tools.
Rates of pay can be another issue as location can be a factor. There are online English teaching companies that pay as little as $3 an hour but I won’t be listing those here. There are others that start at $8 per hour and up to $20 depending on your qualification, experience and location.
The most common methods of payment are direct to your bank account and via PayPal. So make sure to check that you can easily receive payment where you are located.

One of the most popular and highly recommended online teaching companies is VIPKid due to its great rate of pay. This is an excellent opportunity to share your English teaching skills with children in China but only applicants from the US and Canada can apply and you must have a degree. A company that traditionally teaches English face-to-face has now branched out with online learning for children and adults in China. If you're fluent in English, have a TEFL/TESOL certificate along with a degree you can apply to start teaching English online with EnglishFirst.
DaDaABC
Very similar to VIPKid, this is another Chinese company that has a very high reputation for teaching children English online and is affiliated with reputed US companies. You must have a degree and the pay rate is very competitive, up to $18 per hour.
iTutor
If you’re looking for something a bit more structured with guaranteed work, iTutor requires you to have a degree, TEFL/TESOL and be available for a minimum of 10 hours including working early morning weekends for students located in China and Japan. Payment is made monthly and you can earn between $1500 to $3000.
PalFish
You can set your own rates when working with PalFish. You don’t even need a computer as you can do your online teaching on your mobile phone. To join this online English teaching platform you can be a college student or have a TEFL/TESOL certificate.
Cambly
If you do not have teaching experience Cambly is able to accommodate you if you still want to teach virtually. As long as you are fluent in English you can be based anywhere as a private tutor and have conversational English online with your students. For those of you located in Latin America you can join the online tutoring company LatinHire. They act as a third party education recruitment agency. They have a range of online teaching jobs that not only cover English but also Maths, Accounting, Chemistry and other subjects. You will have to go through an application process and provide certification.
AllRight Teaching
This is an app that teaches online English to European children. You will need to have a degree or teaching certificate, be able to speak fluent English and one other European language. There are set hours and pay is up to $12 per hour.
Final Thoughts
One of the advantages of teaching English online is that you can be location independent. As long as you are available and have a strong internet connection you can teach English remotely. Depending on your skill level you can start an online English teaching job with or without a degree.
